What is a tax home?

When pilots or flight attendants travel for work, they are allowed to write off meal expenses if they the meet two requirements:

1.  The trip involves at least on overnight rest period.
2.  The location of the overnight is away from the person's tax home.

Generally, a crewmember's tax home is the entire city or general area where their main place of business or work is located, regardless of where they maintain their family home.  A tax home for a pilot or flight attendant is almost always their base or domicile.  If crewmembers commute, the only way a tax home might be different than their base or domicile is if they are on a temporary assignment.
